Mad Jens and penalties

Mad Jens and penalties

The Times reports that the piece of paper used by Jens Lehmann, which helped win the World Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out against Argentina, is to be auctioned off for charity.

"Lehmanns note detailed the penalty habits of seven Argentine players. The messages were brief: Riquelme left high. Crespo long run/right, short run/left. Heinze left low. Ayala long wait, long run right. Messi left. Aimar long wait left. Rodriguez left.

Lehmann said that the note, which has also featured in a German documentary, will be sold for charity.

However, before the goalkeeper is championed for his altruism and professionalism, it is worth studying the evidence.

Although he did indeed save Ayalas kick, it was a woeful attempt that any self-respecting nonagenarian would have expected to stop. He also failed to predict that Juan Roman Riquelme, Hernan Crespo and Lionel Messi would not be on the pitch by the end. Nor did he allow for the heat that meant the ink ran and rendered the note almost illegible. And Rodriguez scored."

So, simply by looking at the piece of paper between penalties it could be argued that Lehmann unnerved the Argentinean forwards.

The penalty shoot-out can be seen here.

Another psychological factor in this penalty-kick win may have been Lehmanns save from Argentinas captain Riquelme in the 90th minute of the second-leg of the Champions League semi-final only a couple of months previously.

On that day Lehmann took no notice of a tip from Thierry Henry, who admitted afterwards "I am glad Jens ignored my advice."

Henry later put it down to the fact that "he (Riquelme) saw me going to talk to Jens he thought that was what I was saying and he changed things... I dont know if it was a double bluff but it can help. If Im playing against someone I know and he goes to speak to the goalkeeper, you cant help thinking what he said."

The lesson from all this seems to be that if you want to save a penalty then the best way to go about it is to unnerve the opposition. So whilst mad Jens is getting all the credit, havent goalies like Bruce Groebbelaar and Fabien Barthez been doing this for eternity?
